Philippine Embassy in Berlin Holds Outreach for Filipinos in Southwestern Germany.

Berlin – The Philippine Embassy in Berlin conducted its second consular mobile outreach service at the Kath. Pfarrheim St. Jacobs in Schifferstadt, Rhineland-Palatinate  on 28 March 2015.  The consular team was assisted by the Filipino Community in Schifferstadt near Mannheim and Ludwigshafen.

Bordering the states of North Rhine–Westphalia to the north, Hessen to the east, Baden-Württemberg to the southeast, and Saarland to the southwest, Rhineland Palatinate was an ideal location for servicing Filipinos residing in the major Federal States in the western part of Germany. 

A team from the Philippine Embassy in Berlin conducted the one-day outreach, composed of Consul Adrian Cruz, Mr. Ruben Atienza, Mrs. Rowena Adaya Hernandez, Ms. Marie Reyes and Mr. Armand Mahinay. The consular team facilitated 121 passport appications, 17 notarials, 8 certfications, 2 visas and 5 overseas voting registrations.

Filipino Awarded Third Place in International Student Poster Design Competition

(Berlin) Nineteen-year old Jhaimarr San Miguel won third place in the international student poster competition entitled "Water is Life 2015" sponsored by the German Sanitation, Heating and Air Conditioning Association ( ZVSHK).

In describing his poster design, Mr. San Miguel said that “Every drop counts” serves as a reminder to people of the importance of water as a resource. He explained that water is vital “not only for each individual but for humanity as a whole” and that we should be “extremely careful and considerate in our use of water because not everyone on the planet has as plentiful a supply of water as we do.”

Mr. San Miguel is currently enrolled at the FEU Institute of Technology and has been interested in graphic design since entering college.  In an interview by the Philippine Embassy in Berlin, Mr. San Miguel said that the poster competition was only the second contest he had entered, and he was “overwhelmed” to learn his design was judged to win third prize.

All-Women Delegation from Sauerland Visits the Philippine Embassy in Berlin

Berlin, 24 March 2015.  A 40-member all-female delegation from Sauerland celebrated women’s month at the Philippine Embassy in Berlin. As part of the Philippine Embassy’s efforts to cultivate good relations with members of the German Parliament (Bundestag) and link up with Filipino communities in Germany, Ambassador Melita S. Sta. Maria-Thomeczek welcomed the delegation to the Philippine Embassy whose visit was facilitated by the office of Bundestag Member Dirk Wiese (Social Democratic Party). Around twenty of the delegates had Filipino roots and shared stories of courage and solidarity in relation to the relief efforts in their respective communities in the Sauerland region in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.

Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) Affirms Commitment to Strengthen Dual Education in the Philippines

Berlin, 19 March 2015.  During a recent visit to Bonn, Ambassador Melita Sta. Maria-Thomeczek had the opportunity to call on BIBB Deputy President Prof. Dr. Michael Weiss and senior management at the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB or Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung).

Both sides noted that following the visit of President Aquino to Germany in September 2014, institutional and technical cooperation has developed at a fast pace.  The BIBB is acting as the focal point for Germany under the Joint Declaration of Intent in the Field of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Harnessing Strengths, Renewing Partnerships

Ambassador Melita S. Sta. Maria-Thomeczek links up with members of Philippine Women’s Forum e.V - Babaylan in Cologne.
Berlin, 7 March 2015. To renew partnerships and invite them to continue harnessing their strengths as respected communities in Germany, Philippine Ambassador Melita S. Sta. Maria-Thomeczek, met with Filipino communities in various parts of the country in the months of February – March. This was part of the Embassy’s thrust to broaden and deepen relationships with Filipino communities. Ambassador Sta. Maria-Thomeczek, who presented her credentials to German Federal President Joachim Gauck on 04 March linked up with Filipino community networks in Essen, Frankfurt, Cologne, Bonn, and Nueremberg, covering 4 States, and the City-State of Hamburg.

‘We need to link up with and link in our Filipino communities here in Germany. The Filipino communities are our natural partners in pursuing our national interests in this country. They are our “ambassadors-of-goodwill” in their local regions. Strong solidarity with and among our communities make for strong partnerships and better awareness on the work to promote our people’s and country’s welfare.”  Ambassador Sta. Maria-Thomeczek stated.

Philippine Ambassador Meets Filipino Community in Hamburg

Hamburg, 7 March 2015.  Ambassador Melita S. Sta. Maria-Thomeczek, along with Father Simon Boiser SVD of the Philippine Catholic Mission in Hamburg and Pastor Joel Ciprez of the World International Ministries, led the opening ceremonies for the 2nd Basketball Tournament at the Sporthalle in Hamburg. The activity, which brought together Catholic and non-Catholic Filipinos in Hamburg, featured five competing teams, including one from Belgium. Members of the Federation of Filipino Organizations in Northern Germany helped organize the tournament.

During her opening remarks, Ambassador Sta. Maria-Thomeczek thanked the leaders, especially Father Boiser and Pastor Joel, for their efforts in enhancing solidarity in the Filipino community. Afterwards, the Ambassador met with the leaders of the Filipino community in a separate session and explained the mandate of the Philippine Embassy in Berlin, particularly in pursuing the three pillars of foreign policy. She encouraged the leaders to contribute to these efforts, especially in creating the conditions to ease the lives of Filipinos overseas. After the sharing session, Ambassador Sta. Maria-Thomeczek responded to questions from the audience.
