12 January 2012, Berlin – Ambassador Maria Cleofe R. Natividad took the opportunity to personally convey to both Federal President Christian Wulff and Foreign Minister Dr. Guido Westerwelle the invitation to visit the Philippines during the traditional New Year’s Reception for Ambassadors at the Bellevue Palace on 11 January 2012.

President Wulff in his new year remarks expressed his desire to forge closer cooperation as Germany tackles its tasks in the world as a fair and reliable partner.  He mentioned that, “I seek close contact with my counterparts and other decision-makers around the world. In doing so I depend on cooperation with all of you, and I may say that that cooperation is excellent.”

Ambassador Natividad also conveyed the appreciation of the Philippine Government for the emergency humanitarian assistance of Euro 500,000.- which the German government immediately provided to the Philippines for the victims of typhoon “Sendong”.

Philippine-German relations was greatly reinvigorated during the historic official visit of Secretary del Rosario in Berlin last December 2011 where he was warmly received by FM Westerwelle.  During the first visit by a Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs in the last 10 years, the two Foreign Ministers signed the Joint Declaration on Cultural Cooperation.

A return visit this year by Foreign Minister Westerwelle and by President Wulff would make more vibrant Philippine bilateral relations with Germany, the country’s most important economic partner in Europe.  (END)
